Microsoft Dynamics GP Roadmap to 2028 and Beyond

Microsoft Dynamics GPTerry Heley on the Dynamics GP Support and Services Blog posted an article on Friday on the exciting future of Microsoft Dynamics GP and giving a Lifecycle Update. As part of the article she inked to the published Lifecycle (Roadmap) for Microsoft Dynamics GP which extends to 2028 and beyond for Microsoft Dynamics GP.

The published roadmap also shows the end of mainstream and extended support for versions older versions of the product which predate the Modern Lifecycle:

In brief:

  • 2013 and 2013 R2 are out of mainstream support and in extended support until 11/4/2023.
  • 2015 and 2015 R2 are out of mainstream support and in extended support until 14/4/2025.
  • 2016 and 2016 R2 are out of mainstream support on 13/7/2021 and in extended support until 7/4/2026.
  • 2018 and 2018 R2 in mainstream support until 10/1/2023 and in extended support until 7/4/2026.

Microsoft Dynamics GP is now under the Modern Lifecycle and has the same commitment from Microsoft as Dynamics 365. The Modern Lifecycle means there should be more frequent updates to Microsoft Dynamics GP with at least three updates a year in January, June/July and October.

Microsoft will continue to keep adding new features and improving it based on direct feedback from users. The best way to make sure you continue to benefit from the improvements is to keep up-to-date on upgrades and use the latest version of Microsoft Dynamics GP.

The key takeaway from the published Lifecycle is that Microsoft Dynamics GP is not going anywhere and development will continue under the Modern Lifecycle policy with multiple releases each year.

Upgrading Microsoft Dynamics GP: Missing Security Roles

Microsoft Dynamics GPWhen you do a fresh install of Microsoft Dynamics GP, all of the required security roles and tasks are created. However, when Dynamics GP is upgraded, the new security roles and tasks are not automatically added. Microsoft do supply a set of scripts each time which can be run to add the roles and tasks.

This comes up every time we upgrade a client and I am tired of having to hunt out the posts from Microsoft, so I’m bringing together a list of the last few scripts and will add new ones here as each version is released.

Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015 has seen the introduction of some PowerShell cmdlets. This is something new in the Dynamics GP arena which I am going to need to investigate. The first step in this, is to install GP PowerShell. This is done by starting the setup.exe on the GP 2015 installation media and, under Additional Products, select GP PowerShell:

Hands On With Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015 RTM: Installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Add-in for Microsoft Word

One of the very useful additions in Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 was the ability to create invoice, remittance and other types of documents in a Word Template rather than having to do it all in Report Writer (although Report Writer is still needed if you want to create a custom field or make other fields available to the Word Template). While much of the editing and changing of formatting can be done using Word as is, if you want to add any new fields then the Microsoft Dynamics GP Add-in for Microsoft Word is required on any machine which will be used for doing this.

To install the Microsoft Dynamics GP Add-in for Microsoft Word open the setup.exe from the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015 installation media and, under Additional Products, select Microsoft Dynamics GP Add-in for Microsoft Word:

The first run of Integration Manager is something needed on each client. When staring Integration Manager for the very first time it is important to Run as Administrator.

When Integration Manager starts for the first time, you will be prompted to Register Now or Register Later; if you choose the latter option, Integration Manager will close:

Integration Manager is a handy tool to have around; it allows easy integration of CSV or text files from a multitude of sources (once a suitable integration template has been created).

Its installation process is straightforward. Start the steup.exe and, under Additional Products select Integration Manager:

The Microsoft Dynamics GP web client is as functional as the desktop one, even to the extend to which it integrates with Microsoft Office. However, whenever a user wants to integrate with Office on their machine, they first need to install a new component which allows the Silverlight web client to interact i the user’s installation of Microsoft Office.

To do this click on the padlock/globe/page icon next to the blue help icon in the bottom right of the window and then click on the Install Trusted Configuration link:

In my experience, one of the lesser used add-on products for Dynamics GP is Business Analyzer. For the clients I deal with, the majority of them don’t make much investment in creating SSRS reports; instead they use SmartLists, Excel Reports or BI products such as QlikView.

However, even just using the out-of-the-box SSRS reports can make the Business Analyzer program useful, so I figured I’d give a run through of the installation process. Business Analyzer is installed from the same media as Dynamics GP itself. Start setup.exe and, under Additional Products, click on Microsoft Dynamics GP Business Analyzer:

Hands On With Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015 RTM: Web Services Management Tools Installation

In the last few posts, I’ve covered the installation and configuration of the web services and rounded off with verifying that they are working correctly. The final item I’m going to cover is the optional installation of the Web Services Management Tools; which means the installing the Dynamics Security Console on another machine. Doing this is best practice as it means you don’t have to give access to the server running the web services themselves to all users who might maintain security.

To install the Web Services Management Tools, open the setup.exe from the installation media and, under Additional Products, select Web Services Management Tools:
