Microsoft Dynamics GP Support from ISC Software

ISC Software SolutionsI’ve worked with Microsoft Dynamics GP for over 17 years and, like most people, do not work for the company with whom I first started. In fact, I am now on my third company working with Microsoft Dynamics GP (and starting to do some work with Microsoft Dynamics Business Central). 18 months after I left the first company they bowed out of supporting Dynamics GP; I now hear from a former client whom ISC Software were already on-boarding for support, that two years after I left the second company, Perfect Image Ltd., that they are also now bowing out of supporting Microsoft Dynamics GP.

A few of the clients I worked with at Perfect Image have already decided that they needed to change their support partner and moved across to ISC Software where they can continue to work with me and report being happy with the support, and other services they receive from the team and I.

With a new year about to dawn (and hopefully a better one that 2020), it might be time to review your support contract and consider moving to ISC Software.

Workflows available in Microsoft Dynamics GP

Microsoft Dynamics GPSince Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 saw the introduction of a new Workflow module for approval of documents, almost every version of Dynamics GP since then has introduced new functionality to workflow; sometimes in the form of new approval types or integration with other modules such as Document Attachment.

This diagram shows the available workflow types, colour-coded by version introduced:

Available workflow approval types

If you are looking to implement workflow, I have a book which can guide you though configuring the Microsoft Dynamics GP Workfow module from the basics of designing your workflow process, through building it and the ways that users can interact with the workflow for approvals.

The Workflow module is quite popular and becoming much more so with so many clients working in a distributed manner. There is one problem on the horizon and that is the retirement of TLS 1.0 and 1.1 which the Web Services for Microsoft Dynamics GP rely on. We are waiting for confirmation as to when a fix for this will be available, but I am expecting the fix to require an upgrade of Microsoft Dynamics GP which isn’t always quickly possible.

Fortunately, the company for which I work, ISC Software, are both a VAR and an ISV with a number of products and services available.

One of those products is PurchaseHQ which provides an Azure hosted web portal through which users can log on to do their purchasing series approvals. It fully integrates with the Workflow module in Microsoft Dynamics GP (blog and video) for document approvals (blog and video). The portal is quite a popular approach for organisations with a lot of approvals which need to be done as approvers have a web page they can logon to to see all of their approvals for all companies in one list, rather than receiving one email per approval.

Error adding certificate to Web Services for Microsoft Dynamics GP

Microsoft Dynamics GPWith the current situation a lot of clients now have people working from home using a number of approaches. One of them is to use the Workflow module for document approvals and the integration with Web Services for approval via email. When approvals are done by email on devices outside the domain, the web services need to be securely configured with an SSL certificate.

I was recently working on a Workflow project for a client, but ran into an error when adding the SSL certificate to the web services. When I ran the netsh http add sslcert, I received this error:

Error adding certificate to web services

SSL Certificate add failed, Error: 1312

A specified logon session does not exist. It may already have been terminated.

I’ve not seen this error before, so some investigation was in order. As part of the project, I had provided pre-requisites to the client who had forwarded them into their IT partner to sort out. I discovered that when they added the SSL certificate they had, perhaps not unreasonably, added it to the WebHosting certificate store, but it needed to be in the Personal store.

Once the certificate had been moved, I was able to add the certificate to web services and continue with the configuration.

One item I did flag to the client, is that people wanting to do an approval on a mobile (cell) phone, is that it will not work on Android Chrome as this has retired TLS 1.0 and all of the main browsers will be following suite very soon. While I expect Microsoft to provide a fix for this, an upgrade of Microsoft Dynamics GP will most likely be required.

The client is keeping this under review and may opt to purchase the PurchaseHQ GP Elementz Portal from ISC Software which allows for secure access via an Azurehosted portal with full Microsoft Dynamics GP Workflow integration for document approvals of all Purchasing series workflows.

“The vendor has an existing purchase order…” error message when using Integration Manager

Microsoft Dynamics GPI’ve recently been working with a client to implement Microsoft Dynamics GP and have been using Integration Manager to import the opening data. While importing payables transactions I encountered the following error:

The vendor has an existing purchase order error
The vendor has an existing purchase order. Choose Continue to post or save. Choose Go To to view a purchasing navigation list. Choose Cancel to return to the window...

Making Tax Digital Now Available in Dynamics GP 2016 and 2018

Microsoft Dynamics GPMicrosoft’s Jodi Christiansen has, on the Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog, announced the release of the January hotfix which includes the Making Tax Digital (MTD) updates required for VAT submissions to HMRC from April.

The Microsoft Docs site has been updated with setup instructions; I need to get it downloaded and installed to confirm the functionality, as all of the setup is around the VAT 100 and not VAT Daybook. Clients with more complex VAT often need VAT Daybook which allows them to define which tax codes appear in which boxes on the VAT Return. We’ve previously been assured by Microsoft that the MTD update would include both VAT 100 and VAT Daybook so I need to check that this is in fact the case.

The hotfix can be downloaded from CustomerSource (login required):

  1. Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016 lock
  2. Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 lock

The MTD changes are only available for Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016 and 2018; applying the hotfix will update you to the latest version of the R2 release of these versions. If you’re on a prior version you will need to either upgrade to 2016 or 2018 or source an alternative way of submitting to MTD, such as ISC Software’s Making Tax Digital add-in.
