MDGP 2015 R2 Feature of the Day: Analytical Accounting Transaction Lists

Microsoft Dynamics GPMicrosoft Dynamics GP 2015 R2 will soon be released (due late May/early June and, as with previous releases, Microsoft have started a Feature of the Day series on the Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP Team blog. As I have done with the last three series, I’ll be reposting these blog posts here with a little commentary.

The fourth Feature of the Day is Analytical Accounting Transaction Lists.

This feature provides improvements to SmartLists and Excel Reports for Analytical Accounting (AA) transaction information. The first improvement is an expansion of the amount of information available to be included as columns in the AA SmartLists and Excel Reports. AA tracks a lot of information for each record, and we’ve included more of this data in the SmartLists and Excel Reports.

Microsoft have also improved the way the AA dimension code information displays in the lists. In prior releases, the lists contained a single column for the AA transaction dimension code. Thus, if the company is tracking more than one dimension on a transaction, multiple lines were required in the list for a distribution entry.

In GP2015 R2, they have updated the SmartLists and Excel Reports to display a column for each transaction dimension, showing the code assigned for that dimension.

For example, the below SmartList shows how the list would display for a company tracking Cost Center and Project as AA transaction dimensions.

Analytical Accounting SmartList

The change in how the data displays improves readability of the report, and also improves the ease with which users can summarize and work with the data in Excel using pivot table functionality.

Analytical Accounting is one of the modules which is not much used, but can add substantial analysis without needing the chart of accounts to be overly complicated.

If you’re thinking of starting to use Analytical Accounting, more information is available in my second book, Microsoft Dynamics GP Financial Management:

My MVP Has Been Renewed

Microsoft Dynamics GPI received my notification today that I have been awarded the Microsoft® Most Valuable Professional award a second time.

Congratulations! We are pleased to present you with the 2014 Microsoft® MVP Award! This award is given to exceptional technical community leaders who actively share their high quality, real world expertise with others. We appreciate your outstanding contributions in Dynamics GP technical communities during the past year.

I feel slightly like a fraud as my contributions to the Dynamics Community forums have been almost non-existant recently and blog posts have slowed. However, in large part that was because I was working on my third book which is out and has been published (see links below). So now I plan to get back to new blog posts and contributing to the Community Forum on a more regular basis.

New Book Available: Implementing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client

Microsoft Dynamics GPLast year I had two books published via Packt Publishing, the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 Cookbook and Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 Financial Management. Well, in the next few days I will have a new book available for purchase; Implementing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client:

Implementing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client

The book will initially be available from Amazon in the USA and various countries in Europe as a paperback and can also be purchased in PDF eBook form (the eBook is actually available now; the hard copy from Amazon and other retailers will follow soon).

This book provides guidance for the implementation of the Microsoft Dynamics GP web client with step-by-step guides, illustrations and links to useful resources.

Who This Book Is For

This book is aimed at Dynamics GP users and partners who intend to implement the web client for Microsoft Dynamics GP for individual clients; much of the process for installing a multi-tenant deployment is the same as the scale-out one, but this book is specifically focusing on the scale-out deployment. This book assumes you have a knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory for creating users and groups, IIS and application deployments. A basic knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics GP is also required.

What This Book Covers

This book covers the scale-out deployment of the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 web client, from prerequisites through installation to logging in, using and managing. An upgrade of the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 SP2 web client to Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 is covered, before closing with a look at troubleshooting problems.

How This Book Is Structured

Chapter 1, Introduction to the Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client, covers the basics of the web client including a look at the pros and cons of the web client versus the classic desktop client and the deployment methods available.

Chapter 2, Prerequisites of the Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client, covers the prerequisites for installing or upgrading the Microsoft Dynamics GP web client.

Chapter 3, Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client Scale-Out Deployment, covers the scale-out deployment method of installing the Microsoft Dynamics GP web client.

Chapter 4, Logging In, Using and Managing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client, covers the process of logging into the web client, the navigation differences between the desktop and web client versions of Microsoft Dynamics GP and then how the web client can be managed.

Chapter 5, Upgrading a Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client Scale Out Deployment, covers the upgrade of the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 SP2 web client to the R2 version.

Chapter 6, Troubleshooting the Microsoft Dynamics GP Web Client, includes tips for troubleshooting and some of more common issues during the implementation.

I will be adding additional sales channels in the near future, but for now you can buy a PDF eBook, or go to CreateSpace, Amazon.com or Amazon UK for a paperback copy.

NB. The book can currently be bought on CreateSpace and Amazon UK, but not all of the Amazon sites have it listed as available; this should happen in the next few days.

“Standing on the shoulders of giants” or “A new MVP is awarded”

Microsoft MVPMany events happen to me around the last two weeks of September and first two weeks of October.

This year is no different. I moved house on the 19th September and today, 1st October I have received an email from the Microsoft Community Engagement team informing me that I have been awarded the 2013 Microsoft® MVP Award.

Woohoo! Go me 🙂

However, by no means does this award mean I can relax; in fact I have a bit of a backlog of posts to get through and a couple of other ideas I’m trying to develop which will hopefully help the community on top of my current activities. I also want to get back to contributing on the Community forum again which has dipped a little due to workload and moving house (lots of boxes to unpack and furniture to assemble/position). So a busy time ahead over the coming months.

Finally, there is no way that I would have won this award without the outstanding contributions made to the online Dynamics GP community by the MVPs and other contributors. So thanks to all who contribute back to the community.

If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
