In this series on the Administrator Tools module of GPPT, I’ve taken a look at the tools provided and how they can be used. Overall, I think there are some very useful tools available in this module. I was sceptical of the Deny Based Security one when I first heard of it, but it seems to be quite easy to use and doesn’t add the complexity I feared.

For the tools available in this module, I’d say this was one to purchase.

I’m going to take a break from GPPT for a bit, but will return another time with some more posts on its functionality.

The Window Position Memory window is used to specify which windows in the Microsoft Dynamics GP application should remember their position, size and state on a per user basis; any window (form) in any dictionary can be added to the list and all sub-windows on selected window (form) will be remembered.

GPPT ships with a small selection of windows pre-configured to be remembered (these are the main transaction and card windows for each module), but more can be added and already selected ones removed using the Window Position Memory window (GP Power Tools area page >> Setup >> Window Position Memory).

When opened, the window takes a few moments to load as it scans all dictionaries. Once loaded the right pane shows the windows which have already been selected; the checkboxes next to them can be unmarked to deselect them:

The Company Login Filter window (GP Power Tools area page >> Setup >> Company Login Filter) is used to set up filtering of the companies available in the Company Login window for a user depending on the instance of the application environment currently being used. This is useful functionality as, on a system with different customization dictionaries or different custom forms and reports for different companies, you can ensure that the correct companies can only be used with the appropriate application client.

This is a scenario used by a number of my clients, so I was interested in doing some testing of this function. The way we’ve dealt with it in the past it to giev the client two shortcuts, looking at different launch files.

There is two ways of configuring this tool, but I am only looking at one of them. I have a single Dex.ini file and two launch files in the application folder; the default DYNAMICS.SET and a DYNAMICS-UK.SET which is pointing at different report and forms locations.

To configure the company login filters, launch the window and enter a Profile ID and Profile Name.

The left scrolling window will populate with the profile ID and a branch for Default Filter when no Path matched. Select this and then mark one (or more) of the companies listed in the right window:

Belinda Allen brought my attention to a suggestion on MS Connect asking that the Letter Writing Assistant be updated to allow debtors and creditors (customers and vendors to my US readers) be emailed directly from the Letter Writing Assistant based on the email address on the Primary Address.

I think this would be a very good feature to add. I’m sometimes reluctant to show people the Letter Writing Assistant due to having to print the letters rather than emailing them. I often end up showing them how to export a SmartList and use Word to mail merge and email the letters instead, but having the feature included would be far better.

Please vote for this suggestion here so we can get Microsoft to include this update.

The Dictionary Control (GP Power Tools area page >> Setup >> Dictionary Control) window is useful for troubleshooting issues with third party products as you can effectively remove the dictionaries one-by-one until the problem has been identified.

The Dex.ini Configuration (GP Power Tools area page >> Setup >> Dex.ini Configuration) window can be used to automate changes to the Dex.ini settings for all workstations. This is a very useful tool, especially when there are either a lot of desktop clients installed or a lot of Citrix/terminal servers:

This post is part of the Hands On With the GP Power Tools (GPPT) – Administrator Tools series in which I am taking a hands on look at the various tools offered by GPPT.

In this little subseries on the Administrator Settings (GP Power Tools area page >> Settings >> Administrator Settings), the first piece of functionality I’m going to cover is the Company Color Scheme Settings. This is functionality which I have written about before in the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 Cookbook when GP Power Tools was still the Support Debugging Tool and was free from Microsoft; this chapter was cut from the 2016 Cookbook as we were only covering standard Dynamics GP functionality.

This is one of the features which I already knew well and liked; the main use I, and my clients make of this function, is to make it obvious whether a user is logged into a live or test company (and sometimes which of the live companies).

To activate the Company Color Scheme Settings function, mark the Activate Company based Color Schemes checkbox and then use the Select Theme Colors to select from one of the many themes available:

The Administrator Settings window (GP Power Tools area page >> Setup >> Administrator Settings) gives access to a number of tools which allows the look and usability of Dynamics GP to be changed as well as allowing the configuration of some of the features of GP Power Tools itself.

The functionality of this window is a bit much to cover in a single post, so over the next few posts, I’m going to step through this functionality.
