Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 R2 was released on the 2^nd October. In this series of posts, I’ll be going hands on and installing the majority of the components; some of them, such as Analysis Cubes for Excel, which are little used, I won’t be covering.

I have a number of clients using eConnect in different ways for integration. Several of them use eConnect via the MSMQ and Incoming Queue. Before installing eConnect on the server, there are two prerequisites which must be completed.

I’m linking back to the posts I wrote for the eConnect 18 Prerequisites series when Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 RTM was released as there has been no change in this area.

The first prerequisite, is to set the service account as a local administrator on the server. Without doing this, the eConnect services will not start correctly.

Secondly, you need to install the MSMQ Triggers Windows feature. Without this, the Incomging/Outgoing eConnect queues cannot be installed.

Once these two prerequisites are met, you’ll be ready to install eConnect on the server.

As I work with many clients with more than one company in Microsoft Dynamics GP, I always create at least one additiona company, in addition to ,a href=’https://www.azurecurve.co.uk/2018/10/hands-on-with-microsoft-dynamics-gp-2018-r2-add-sample-company/’>deploying the sample company.

To do this, launch GP Utilities and log in using the sa account:

With the Fabrikam sample company deployed, we can now log into Microsoft Dynamics GP.

Launch Microsoft Dynamics GP from the start menu and log in; you can usually use either the sa or DYNSA logins. However, if you have the VAT Daybook feature installed, you will need to log in as sa:

With the first first client now installed we need to deploy the server objects.

Back in the day, there was seaprate server and client compenents, but this changed with Microsoft Dynamics GP 10; now the server objects are deployed from a client install. To deploy the server components, start GP Utilities and log in using the sa account:

With the media downloaded and unzipped, the first item I’m going to cover, is the installation of the client. The first client is also the one which I’ll be using to depoly thr server objects.

Launch the setup.exe and you will be presented with the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 Bootstrapper Setup; click Install to install the prerequisites:

Before Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 R2, or any of the related additional products, can be installed, there is one prerequisite which cannot be handled by the installer process. This is the .NET Framework 3.5 feature which is installed using the Add Roles and Features Wizard available via Server Manager on Windows Server or using Turn Windows features on or off accessible via Program and Features on Windows.

If the PC or server you’re planning to install Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 RTM onto, has an Internet connection, then the .NET can be installed simply by using the wizard. However, if, for whatever reason, you don’t have an Internet connection available, the install process isn’t quite that smooth.

On both server and PC you can do an offline install and I have blogged about this several years ago:

1. Offline install on Windows.
2. Offline install on Windows Server.

Both of the above posts were for previous versions of Windows, but both are still relevant for the later versions.

Microsoft announced the release of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 R2 on the 2^nd October. I am going to be doing a fresh install of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 R2 and will be using the full installation download.

The installation media is now available for download from Microsoft CustomerSource (CustomerSource login required).

If you’re doing an upgrade, the service pack can be downloaded from the CustomerSource service packs page (CustomerSource login required).

I found the download ran both quickly and smoothly, but others have reported some issues with the download. I assume this is to do with the volume of downloads just after release and should settle down fairly quickly.

With the release of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 R2, it is time to get hands on again. Whenever a new version comes out, I step through installing all (or the majority) or the products available.

Over the coming days, I’ll be performing all of the installations and posting step-by-step guides to them. The series index, below, will automatically populate* as each of the posts goes live.
