Microsoft Dynamics GP Workflow 2.0 Second Edition Now Available

● Ian Grieve ●  ● 3 Comments   ●

Microsoft Dynamics GPMy sixth book is now available to buy in eBook format from azurecurve Publishing.

This is an update to the original Workflow 2.0 book I wrote a couple of years ago. This edition includes coverage of the new functionality introduced in Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016, a new chapter on adding table joins to workflow to allow additional conditions to be created, and some chapters and sections have been rewritten to either expand or make clearer the topics being covered.

Dynamics GP includes a variety of tools and modules to assist in controlling processes and data; one of the major modules for this was the Dynamics Workflow module. However, this module had major flaws which very much limited its usefulness; it was slow, clunky and difficult to install, configure and maintain.

Hands On With Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016 R2: Configure & Use OData Service

● Ian Grieve ●  ● 1 Comment   ●

Microsoft Dynamics GPWith the release of Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016 R2 it’s time for a series of “hands on” posts where I go through the installation of all of it’s components; the index for this series can be found here.

I am not going to cover the configuraion and use of OData in this post, as it is not an area with which I have much experience. However, I know a man who does and I wrote a book with him in 2016:

Microsoft Dynamics GP Cookbook

Mark Polino is one of the three top people for reporting from Microsoft Dynamics GP and, in Chapter 13: Modern Business Intelligence for Microsoft Dynamics GP of the Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016 Cookbook, Mark covered how to configure and use the GP OData Service.

The full outline of topics covered by Mark is as follows:

  • Introduction
  • Activating OData for better external analysis
  • Secure OData to control access
  • Connecting OData to Excel for Business Intelligence
  • Connecting GP to Power BI with OData
  • Adding Power BI to the home page in Dynamics GP

The Association of Dynamics Professionals Has Awarded Me “Advanced Credentialed Professional”

● Ian Grieve ●  ● 0 Comments   ●

Association of Dynamics ProfessionalsBack in September when I was at reIMAGINE I sat two examinations.

A couple of weeks later I was notified that I had passed both exams and had two credentials:

  1. Microsoft Dynamics GP Core Financials Setup & Functionality
  2. Microsoft Dynamics GP Core Installation and Configuration

Having acquired both, I have recently been notified that I am an Advanced Credentialed Professional, and am one of only 5% of candidates to have achieved this.

My MVP Renewed for 2016 And Jen Kuntz Awarded

● Ian Grieve ●  ● 0 Comments   ●

Microsoft MVPWhile in America on vacation following reIMAGINE 2016, I received the notification email that I had been awarded the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional award for the fourth year running. It’s very nice to receive the award as it shows I am still contributing in a meaningful way to the Dynamics GP community.

There was another new MVP for Dynamics GP added to the roster this month as well; Jen Kuntz.

Jen has been a great contributor to the Dynamics GP community for a while now and I’m delighted to see that this has been officially recognised by Microsoft with her MVP award.

Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016 Cookbook Now Available

● Ian Grieve ●  ● 0 Comments   ●

Microsoft Dynamics GPMark Polino and I have been working on a new version of the Microsoft Dynamics GP Cookbook for Dynamics GP 2016. Originally, it was scheduled for publication in January 2017.

However, Mark and I were able to proceed a tad ahead of schedule, meaning the Cookbook is now available:

Microsoft Dynamics GP Cookbook

Despite being early, the quality of the book is as high, if not higher, than previous versions as this book is a genuine collaboration between Mark and I. By splitting the work in this way, we were each able to focus on particular areas in which we had strengths.

We also received good feedback, to guide improvements, from fellow MVPS Leslie Vail and Jivtesh Singh.

You can order the book from Packt Publishing.

Microsoft Dynamics GPMark Polino and I have been working on a new version of the Microsoft Dynamics GP Cookbook for Dynamics GP 2016. Originally, it was scheduled for publication in January 2017.

However, Mark and I were able to proceed a tad ahead of schedule, meaning the Cookbook is now slated for release in August:

Microsoft Dynamics GP Cookbook

That’s right; scheduled for release this month. Five months ahead of schedule. Don’t worry though, the quality is as high, if not higher, than previous versions as this book is a genuine collaboration between Mark and I. By splitting the work in this way, we were each able to focus on particular areas in which we had strengths.

We also received good feedback, to guide improvements, from fellow MVPS Leslie Vail and Jivtesh Singh.

You can pre-order the book from Packt Publishing, and very soon your pre-orders will be shipped. From what I gather the book should be available to order, as opposed to pre-order, in the next week or so, so you won’t need to wait long to receive your copy.

Pre-Conference Training for reIMAGINE Attendees

● Ian Grieve ●  ● 2 Comments   ●

Microsoft Dynamics GPIf you are going to reIMAGINE then you can also sign up to one of two training courses which are being run on the day before the conference.

The first is on Working with Excel, Power BI and Dynamics and is being presented by MVP Belinda Allen:

Business Intelligence (BI) and Microsoft Power BI is everywhere you look. Are you getting the right answers AND the right questions? This class is designed to walk you through the basics of all the Microsoft Power BI tools. We’ll build dashboards, maps and even report on data from websites. When you leave the class you’ll understand the Microsoft Power BI tools and the Microsoft Power BI application. We’ll even talk pricing, although most of it is FREE.

The second is on Workflow 2.0 and is being presented by yours truly:

Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 R2 saw the introduction of Workflow 2.0; a new Dynamics GP based approval workflow engine which replaced the old SharePoint based one. Learn how to design, create and maintain approval workflows and how to extend workflow to allow the creation of custom table joins.

If you want to attend training, you will need to select one of the two available courses (unfortunately, you can’t sign up to both) when registering for reIMAGINE.

My MVP Renewed for 2015 and David Musgrave Awarded

● Ian Grieve ●  ● 1 Comment   ●

Microsoft MVPWell, I received the notification email yesterday afternoon that I had been awarded the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional award for the third year running. It’s really niec to receive the award as it shows I am still contributing in a meaningful way to the Dynamics GP community.

There was another new MVP for Dynamics GP added to the roster this month as well; David Musgrave. Previously David was ineligible for the award as he worked directly for Microsoft, but as of October last year he has been independent again and running Winthrop Development Consultants (the company responsible for GP Power Tools, formerly known as the Support Debugging Tool).

David has always been a great contributor to the Dynamics GP community and I’m delighted to see that this has been officially recognised by Microsoft with his MVP award.
